AEROBAL awarded the world's best aluminum aerosol tank

2023-11-02

Recently, the International Association of Aluminum Aerosol Tank Manufacturers AEROBAL announced the world's Best Aluminum aerosol tank Innovation Award in 2023, and experts from the packaging industry, aerosol industry and world-renowned magazines selected the winners of the 2023 Global Aluminum Aerosol Tank Award.

The Nivea antiperspirant spray aluminum can produced by Tubex, a German aluminum can manufacturer, was the winner of the "Aluminum Aerosol Cans already on the Market" category.

The design and color scheme of the product is striking, the unique deep eggplant color, the use of fine gradient printing technology, the text on the body of the jar Pearl&beauty exudes a special shine, applying the right color on the dark background was not a small challenge, resulting in a prominent design element, Pearl in its brilliance becomes a visual highlight, It's impressive. In addition, the design concept of the jar fits perfectly with the color and the elegant shape and lines of the jar.

The Smart Sustainable aluminum can produced by Swiss aluminum can manufacturer Nussbaum was the winner of the "Prototype Aluminum Aerosol Tank" category. The aluminum can was designed in collaboration with Italian paint manufacturer Salchi Metalcoat Srl. The aluminum can combines innovation, sustainability and functionality without compromising performance, safety and durability. The tank body is made from 100% recycled aluminum, derived from used beverage can waste, with no original or post-industrial recycled materials added. The patented Nucan-PCR alloy is certified according to DIN EN ISO 14021, ensuring transparency and traceability of the value chain from the used beverage can to the finished Nucan-PCR can. This can-to-tank upcycling concept can reduce CO2 emissions by 96 percent.

The clear and white primer on the tank as well as the clear varnish are bio-based polyester coatings from Salchi's BIOMOCO line, a biologically sustainable modern paint, a combination of coatings made from castor oil and waste cooking oil that partially replaces traditional fossil materials. The coating has excellent mechanical properties, good elasticity, low VOC content and heat resistance to water bath. Finally, the inner coating of the can is also innovative: combining the excellent compatibility of epoxy paint with the benefits of A BPA-free paint solution.

In the "Sustainable Development" category, two winners were selected. They are Lornamead CD deodorant spray aluminum cans produced by German aluminum can manufacturer Linhardt and Nivea styling Mousse aluminum cans produced by German aluminum can manufacturer Tubex.

The 150ml deodorant spray aluminum can is composed of an alloy of 100% post-consumer recycled aluminum and 0.3% primary manganese. In order to comply with the principle of packaging sustainability as much as possible, the main objective of this product is to minimize the use of materials and meet the stability requirements of aluminum aerosol cans for deodorant. The second goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of the cans by using post-consumer recycling (PCR) aluminum. As a result, this innovative can can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 296.5 tons per million cans produced. Unlike most PCRS, Linhardt uses a direct production from molten aluminum waste, with no energy-intensive second melting process, so the carbon footprint is very low, reducing CO2 emissions by 92%.

In addition, the lighter weight also reduces transportation emissions. The supply chain can be traced according to ISO 22095:2020. High material availability and guaranteed quantities guarantee high security of supply. The 150 ml CD deodorant aerosol tank produced by Linhardt is an excellent example of material conservation and recycling.

Using a patented alloy Neucan 3.1, Nivea Styling Mousse aluminum cans offer significant weight savings, and combined with the advantages of PCR recycled materials, this unique can shows that the closed-loop concept can also be applied to aluminum monolithic cans. The tank is made of 50% real PCR® and uses PURe(natural organic printing ink) for design and decoration, and further optimizes the overall solution on the original advantages. However, the decisive innovation of the jar lies in the unique recycling process of the real-PCR® material used in the product. Not only are recycled materials used, but manufacturers also consider the exact source of the recycled material and how to dispose of the recycled material to get it back into the cycle. Therefore, the advantage lies not only in the use of post-consumer recycling (PCR) materials, but also in the particularly energy-efficient recycling process.

In addition, Tubex's winning design proves that efficient sustainability and excellent appearance do not have to be opposites, with successful designs combined with unique shapes, and the fantastic appearance of this winning aerosol tank is impressive.

Gregor Spengler, Secretary General of AEROBAL, commented very highly on this year's World's Best Aluminum Aerosol Tank competition: "Once again, I am very pleased with the quality of the competition, which year after year is impressive and demonstrates the strength of our industry, especially the creativity and innovation strength of our member companies. In fact, in addition to excellent design, the focus is on sustainability, once again highlighting its huge importance in the field of packaging. This gives me a lot of confidence for the future, because compared to other packaging materials, aluminum aerosol cans do not only have a trump card, it has many positive metal properties in terms of sustainability. In addition, continued investment and innovation in our industry ensures that the position of aluminum aerosol cans as a sustainable packaging solution for the future will continue to grow positively."
